40 years ago today, U2 released their third studio album, War. The critically acclaimed album was a commercial success and was the band’s first album certified gold. The last song on the album, “40”, was used as the closing song to most of U2’s concerts in the 80’s. “40” was written rather hurriedly, with the band being a week late to finishing the album. Bono opened the bible and decided to put music to Psalm 40, and just add some lines and modifications. “40” isn’t the only song from U2 that makes biblical references. Spirituality is a common theme in their music.

Many other artists have made biblical references in their songs, whether they use symbolism inspired by familiar stories, or write lyrics taken directly from the scripture. Some popular tunes that demonstrate this songwriting style include, “Highway 61 Revisited” by Bob Dylan, “Sympathy for the Devil” by The Rolling Stones, and “Adam Raised a Cain” by Bruce Springsteen. References to the scripture exist in music across genres and eras.
