Coffee Break: State Songs
by Jill Riley and Nilufer Arsala
March 03, 2025

The official song of the North Star State is “Hail! Minnesota.” It was written by University of Minnesota students Truman E. Rickard and Arthur E. Upson in 1904 and was officially adopted by the state in 1945.
There are no plans to replace the anthem, but MinnPost reported last week that a proposal was introduced to add to the list of official state songs. “Purple Rain” by Prince and “Girl From the North Country” by Bob Dylan are rightly up for consideration, but with the sheer amount of talent packed into the state, plenty of others could join the ranks. Today, let’s brainstorm songs that are worthy of an official playlist.
So for today’s 9:30 Coffee Break, what songs do you think should be on the official playlist of Minnesota?
