Coffee Break: Power Pop
by Jill Riley and Nilufer Arsala
October 22, 2025

Wednesday, October 22 marks the anniversary of Matthew Sweet’s third studio album, Girlfriend. The record gave us the title track, and the singles "Divine Intervention" and "I've Been Waiting."
It also got us thinking about power pop, which you can think of as the more energetic cousin of pop rock. The genre started with the early music of bands like The Who and The Beatles, and grew to include releases by groups like Badfinger, The Bangles, Ben Folds, and more. Let’s explore the genre by creating a power pop playlist.
So, for today’s 9:30 Coffee Break, what power pop songs would you like to hear?
