Carol Kaye is known as one of the most prolific musicians in history, and even if you’re not familiar with her, there is a good chance that you’ve heard her work.
Kaye started as a guitarist before switching to bass and eventually became known as the sole woman in The Wrecking Crew, a group of in-demand session musicians from the ‘60s and ‘70s. (Although she was never fond of that name.)
It’s estimated that Kaye played on over 10,000 recordings and can be heard on songs by artists like Frank Sinatra, Simon & Garfunkel, Stevie Wonder, Sam Cooke, Barbra Streisand, Ritchie Valens, The Supremes, The Beach Boys, The Temptations, the Four Tops, The Monkees, Nilsson, and many others.
Star bassist Carol Kaye rejects Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honorKaye was so impactful that she was recognized for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year in the category of Musical Excellence. The now 90-year-old musician rejected the award and didn’t attend the ceremony. Although she was still inducted, her legacy is reflected in her tremendous body of work. Let’s create a playlist showcasing Kaye’s artistry and skill.
