If you’ve been anywhere on social media lately, then there’s a good chance you’re familiar with the work of Quebec band Angine de Poitrine. The group skyrocketed to internet superstardom after a session they did for Seattle public radio station KEXP went viral.
The duo has fans across the globe, and people have even started creating their own art in appreciation of the eccentric band. Angine de Poitrine even caught the ear of Jack White, and they’ll be opening his show in Toronto before heading out on a tour of their own that will take them to Europe and cities on the west coast of North America like Portland, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
Aside from a backstory that includes being alien space rockers, speaking their own language, and donning costumes that include prosthetic noses and monochromatic, polka-dot costumes, what makes Angine de Poitrine stand out is their music.
Often it will take listeners through a range of emotions, which ends with people who were initially caught off guard being hooked to songs that use non-traditional time signatures.
Those types of signatures are also used in math rock. While still managing to stand out, Angine de Poitrine’s music fits the definition of the rock subgenre that tends to gravitate towards varied signatures, intense rhythms, and intricate guitar work.
In the spirit of Khn and Klek (the names of the members of Angine de Poitrine), let’s create a playlist full of non-traditional rock.
So for today’s 9:30 Coffee Break, what songs that are considered math rock would you like to hear?
