According to music history, Tina Turner released the album Private Dancer on this day in 1984. The album was Turner’s first full release of the ‘80s and found her sound leaning more toward a rock and roll direction. It became a huge comeback album for her after the launch of her solo career.
May 29 in Music History: Happy birthday to Melissa EtheridgePrivate Dancer gave us hits like “What’s Love Got to do With It,” the title track “Private Dancer,” and covers of Ann Peebles, “I Can’t Stand the Rain,” and Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.” It’s safe to say that Private Dancer helped to solidify Turner as the ‘Queen of Rock and Roll.’
While comeback albums can launch a familiar artist back into the spotlight, they aren’t a rare phenomenon and have been used across time and genres. In honor of Tina Turner’s album anniversary, let’s create a playlist of songs from our favorite comeback jams.
