Today might seem like just another day, but it’s also the anniversary of Hip Hop! On August 11, 1973, DJ Kool Herc and his sister, Cindy Campbell, put on a party that would change the course of music when Herc used two turntables to flip between the breaks of a song.

This early use of turntablism skills lit the spark that later became hip hop. To mark the occasion, Hip Hop Day is celebrated on August 11 each year. Let’s get in on the fun by creating a hip hop playlist.
