Coffee Break: Bands on the Big Screen
by Nilufer Arsala and Jill Riley
November 06, 2026

We learned during Music History, that it was November 6, 1968, that The Monkees’ movie Head was released.
The film had guest appearances from Jack Nicholson, Teri Garr, Annette Funicello, Frank Zappa, Dennis Hopper, and more, but it still bombed at the box office before eventually becoming a cult classic.
The Monkees movie got us thinking about other groups that crossed over into the world of film. From cameos to starring roles, let’s create a playlist of bands who made it to the big screen.
So for today’s 9:30 Coffee Break, what songs from bands that appeared in a film would you like to hear?
