Meet The Contestants
Matt Schwandt is president and co-founder at Bauhaus Brew Labs in Minneapolis, where he has worked since it opened in July 2014.
When and how did you first discover your passion for craft beer?
I first discovered craft beer in the late 1990s while working at an award-winning brewpub in Nashville, Tenn., called Boscos. Boscos' German-born brewmaster was a huge inspiration of mine, and I learned all about how incredible beer could taste.
What is one of your favorite beer-and-food pairings?
I'm a man of simple tastes: my favorite beer-and-food pairing has always been a pilsner or IPA with a tasty burger.
Beyond beer, what some of your other favorite interests or pastimes?
Aside from beer, I'm a guitar player who dabbles in audio production, and I'm a huge disc golf nerd.
Joe Lien is front-of-house manager at Utepils Brewing Company in Minneapolis, where he has worked since February 1 of this year.
When and how did you first discover your passion for craft beer?
In the mid 2000s, my friends and I often bought mix packs from the liquor store. The first beer that really impressed me was Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale. Then, after working Surlyfest in 2008, I was hooked.
What is one of your favorite beer-and-food pairings?
Fair State Foamers Lime and tacos! They just go so well together.
Beyond beer, what some of your other favorite interests or pastimes?
Camping with my wife and kids, especially at Interstate State Park or Frontenac State Park; playing with my two dogs, Miles (hound mix) and Brisket (French Mastiff mix); and biking with my kids at Cottage Grove Bike Park and at STMA BMX track in St. Michael, Minn.
