Do you know a Minnesota music video you’d like to see featured in the Friday Five? E-mail fridayfive@mpr.org.

 FénixDion, “Morals Might Bite”

This modern outlaw-movie-themed music video cleverly inputs all the right bells and whistles: a dingy motel, mini red convertible, mysterious woman in white, tighty whities, and a main character (lead singer Keston Wright) with a briefcase being chased across Minneapolis by a couple of bad guys. There’s more, but of course we should mention it has a soulful rockin’ tune as the backdrop. What this fugitive did and what he’s carrying is never quite revealed, though subtle cues throughout the story line and lyrical content make for a tantalizing mystery.

Elle PF, “Can You Show Me?”

Between the desk, buttons, dresses, wigs, and chairs, the color work on this video alone could win an award. It’s an art piece, where Barbie-like characters, including Elle PF, are satirically helpless — in need of creepy, lustful men to show them how. The well-crafted indie-pop single is complete with an epically orchestrated chorus chant: Help! Help! Help! For many of us who’ve been subjected to toxic masculinity, there perhaps could never be enough quality feminist anthems such as Elle PF’s new jam. Hear, hear!

Mae Simpson, “Goodbye”

Goodbye, raggedy flannel and trucker hat … Hello, fresh blazer and slick brimmed hat! Mae Simpson goes from drab to fab for her new music video set in Heimie's Haberdashery, an old-fashioned decorated clothing store in St. Paul. A songwriter who specializes in high-energy, feel-good pop/rock music, Simpson and her band make lemonade out of lemons in this song about a breakup. No need to grieve when you can just pick yourself up in the company of friends and fashion.

Landon Conrath, “Trader Joe’s”

Listener, beware: this song might take a few days to get out of your head. Landon Conrath’s smart-phone-quality video for “Trader Joe’s” captures the feeling of self-loathing through a series of mundane tasks, such as shopping at Trader Joe’s, in simple clothing: T-shirt, baggy jeans, and Casio watch. Why try if “nothing matters anyway”? For a rising local pop star, Conrath certainly comes across as sincere in his emotions. Perhaps that is why he’s become so popular. He’s a talented singer, yes, but his lyrics are also very relatable, particularly to young adults in the age of social media.

MPLS Drew, “UP”

MPLS Drew competes with the “big dogs” in this gangster-movie-themed hip-hop video that includes local favorite NUR-D acting as the mob leader. Modist Brewing’s factory provides a modern prohibition-era look for their underground gambling ring. MPLS Drew raps with swiftness and confidence in front of brew tanks, ceiling-stacked cans, and a poker table, where he wins a high-stakes round of Texas hold ‘em. The W grants him access to an exclusive, intimate stage, where he performs a different song that acts as a preview to his upcoming album, Fruit of Passion.
