By 1983, The Police had become one of the biggest rock bands the world, touring behind their Synchronicity album, and on Aug. 24 and 25 of that year, they brought their show to the Met Center in Bloomington, Minnesota, formerly the home of the Minnesota North Stars, and now, IKEA. At that point, the Police had toured relentlessly since 1977, and by 1983, were alternating between arenas and stadiums. The Star Tribune's Jon Bream described their show as adventurous and jazzy, but they were also getting sick of each other — this would be their last tour together for more than 20 years. This week on Teenage Kicks, we'll feature live recordings from their '83 tour, along with songs by some of the dozens who opened for them that year: R.E.M., JOAN JETT, Madness, The Fixx, UB40, and in Minnesota, Ministry.
