Sometimes you get to a Saturday and you just need to rock. This week on Teenage Kicks, we're looking back 40 years ago to the release of Motörhead's classic, Ace of Spades. It was November 1980, and Lemmy Kilmister's band was doing the impossible, bridging the distance between punk and metal, two opposing rock magnets. Along with Iron Maiden and Saxon, Motörhead found themselves at the forefront of what was termed the New Wave of British Metal, which would go on to influence the emerging thrash-metal movement and bands like Metallica. In later years, Lemmy became Rock and Roll Legend personified - often found holding court at the Rainbow Bar and Grill in Los Angeles until his death in late 2015 at the age of 70. Sometimes telling an epic story requires a trilogy and this year's record store day completes it's extended trilogy this week with the October release drop and this week we celebrate on Teenage Kicks by spinning extended mixes, 12in singles. It's been a while since we thought of U2 as an up-and-coming anything, but if you go back to 1980 and the release of their debut Boy, that's what they were: an exciting new band coming out of Ireland, heavily influenced by Joy Division, but with a frontman almost the opposite; where Ian Curtis seemed as brooding and inscrutable as his lyrics, Bono was engaging, enthusiastic, and maybe just as effective at nailing the experiences of adolescence, experience, and striving to grow up in a messed-up world. With their debut album released 40 years ago this week, this week on Teenage Kicks we feature songs from Boy by U2.

This week on Teenage Kicks, we tiptoe further into the vault of Prince — featuring highlights from the deluxe edition boxset of Sign O' The Times that was recently released. It was one of the Prince's most prolific periods of creation, and even with an album a year through the '80s, and Sign O' The Times being a double album in 1987, the new boxset includes over 40 unreleased studio recordings. We'll feature those, along with highlights from a few other double albums of the era: London Calling, Zen Arcade, Rattle and Hum, English Settlement, The River, Daydream Nation, Hot Hot Hot, and Double Nickels on the Dime. This week on Teenage Kicks, Jim McGuinn celebrates Bryan Ferry's 75th birthday, so we'll hear some Roxy Music and more. Plus, it's another drop day for Record Store Day 2020, so Jim will drop in some cool vinyl picks throughout the show.

This week we go back to the early '80s, and a split that led to two successful bands — when Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh picked up their synthesizers and left Phil Oakley and The Human League. Human League would go on to have an iconic hit with Don't You Want Me Baby, but Martyn and Ian would find success as well — as Heaven 17, who released their first album, Penthouse and Pavement, this week back in 1981. Besides Heaven 17, the duo also produced songs on Tina Turner's Private Dancer comeback album, and they cut a song that would, more than 30 years later, be relevant enough to be covered by LCD Soundsystem. This week on Teenage Kicks, we dig into another classic album turning 40; this time, it's David Bowie's Scary Monsters. A strong album that marked the period between Berlin and pop superstardom of Let's Dance, Scary Monsters came out at a time when Bowie's impact on music was stronger than ever. From post-punk to goth to the burgeoning new romantic scene, everyone wanted to be like David Bowie. Meanwhile, he was catching up with an old friend, Major Tom.
