St. Vincent returns to the top this week to end her stay on the Chart with her second induction to the Chart Show Hall of Fame ("Cruel" off Strange Mercy was inducted in 2012) along with another debutante Haley Bonar. After two inductions last week and the Strypes and Lana Del Rey falling off the Chart, we had room for four new entries.
Submit your Chart Show ballot this week for a chance to win 2-day passes to Rock the Garden 2014 at the Walker Art Center featuring musical acts Spoon, De Le Soul, Guided By Voices, Jeremy Messersemith, Lizzo and more!
Presented since 1956, the Ivor Novello Awards honour excellence in British and Irish songwriting and composing. The nominees are judged by the songwriting and composing community and are considered the most prestigious compositions of the year. London Grammar, new entry at #16 this week, won for their song "Strong" while Nick Cave won the Album Award for Push the Sky Away, pipping faves
Arctic Monkeys.
Conor Oberst is new at #17 with a song he debuted for us during an in-studio session in 2012 that made it on to his new album
Upside Down Mountain. Along with opener Dawes who will also be his backing band, he's playing First Avenue this coming Sunday and Monday. The June 1 date is sold out, but tickets are still available for Monday's show. He did an interview with
Bill DeVille recently where he talked about the 400 Bar moving to the Mall of America, auditioning for Inside Llewyn Davis and his upcoming Twin Cities shows.
Max Frost, new at #18, is out on tour with Fitz and the Tantrums right now and just posted a slick new black and white video. He performed "White Lies" in our studios just a few weeks ago.
Sharon Van Etten creeps in at the bottom, the same week that Are We There releases. Pitchfork gave the record a very respectable 8.2 saying, "Her songs emphasize the moment, both in the quality of her performance and in the rawness of her lyrics. As a result, Are We There may be her most present-tense album to date, her most immediate and urgent — the peak of a steady upward trajectory." Pitchfork also ran an extensive interview with her recently wherein she explained the revealing background details of its making.
Hope you all had a wonderful three day weekend; weather-wise it couldn't have been better! Atmosphere made the most of it, selling out their Soundset Festival for the first time (30,000+!!) and making it a special occasion with guest appearances from Brother Ali and Murs.
